Does Herriman have a public pool?
Yes, but only an indoor one, and the city does not run it. Herriman's public pool is inside the J.L. Sorenson Recreation Center, operated by Salt Lake County, with a lap pool and a leisure pool. There is no public outdoor pool in Herriman, and the nearest county outdoor pool, in Riverton, was closed for the 2026 season.
Herriman has one public pool, it is indoors, and Salt Lake County runs it rather than Herriman City.
The pool is inside the J.L. Sorenson Recreation Center at 5350 West Herriman Main Street, operated by Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation (Salt Lake County, JL Sorenson Recreation Center, checked October 2026). There is no Herriman City pool, and there is no public outdoor pool anywhere in Herriman. In summer, the outdoor water in town is splash pads and Blackridge Reservoir, and neither one is a pool.
The indoor pool at J.L. Sorenson
J.L. Sorenson is a full county recreation center, and the pool is the reason most families know it.
There are two bodies of water. The lap pool has eight lanes, a 3-meter and a 1-meter diving board, an overhead balcony with seating for 200 spectators for swim meets, and a swim lift for people who need help getting in. The leisure pool is the one children care about: a play structure, several slides, a large dumping bucket, a lazy river, a fish slide, a bubble fountain, a lily pad crossing and an instructional pool (Salt Lake County, J.L. Sorenson Indoor Pool, checked October 2026).
The diving boards stay closed while the lap pool is in use or a swim team has it, so do not promise a child the high dive on a weeknight.
The center opened on March 18, 2011, funded by the voter-approved Zoo, Arts and Parks program, the Sorenson Group, Herriman City and Jordan School District, and was built to serve Herriman, Bluffdale and Riverton (Deseret News, March 2011). Herriman helped pay for it. The county runs it.
Herriman pool schedule: the hours are shorter than the building’s
The building opens early. The pool does not. The county’s published open-swim hours, as checked in October 2026, are:
- Monday to Friday: 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
- Saturday: noon to 8:00 p.m.
- Sunday: 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Monday through Thursday, the toys and slides are switched off from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. while swim lessons run. The county’s own pool page warns that pool hours and options are limited and asks visitors to call the front desk on 385-468-1340 before going. The center also closes on many holidays, including Independence Day.
Read those hours as a parent and the practical picture is this: the leisure pool with everything running is an after-school and Saturday thing, not a weekday-morning thing during the school year. Families with toddlers who picture a 10 a.m. swim on a Tuesday are usually disappointed.
Indoor vs outdoor: what Herriman has and does not have
This is the part people get wrong, because they assume a city this size has an outdoor summer pool. It does not.
| Option | Indoor or outdoor | Who runs it | Status, October 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| J.L. Sorenson Recreation Center, Herriman | Indoor lap and leisure pools | Salt Lake County | Open year round, limited swim hours |
| South County Pool, Riverton | Outdoor 50-meter lap pool | Salt Lake County | Closed for the 2026 season; reopening Memorial Day weekend 2027 |
| Herriman splash pads (three) | Outdoor, no standing water | Herriman City | Memorial Day to Labor Day |
| Blackridge Reservoir, Herriman | Outdoor, open water | Herriman City | No lifeguard; swim at your own risk |
| Gene Fullmer Recreation Center, West Jordan | Indoor lap and leisure pools | Salt Lake County | Open |
| Life Time, Herriman | Outdoor lap and leisure pools | Private club, membership | Arriving 2027, per the company |
The closest outdoor public pool is South County Pool at 12765 South 1125 West in Riverton, next to Riverbend Golf Course, with a 50-meter lap pool, high and low diving boards and a big lawn. Salt Lake County says it is closed for the 2026 season and will reopen in 2027 on Memorial Day weekend, without giving a reason on its page (Salt Lake County, South County Pool, checked October 2026). The county directs off-season questions about it to J.L. Sorenson, which manages it.
If the Herriman pool is full or closed, the next county indoor option to the north is the Gene Fullmer Recreation Center at 8015 South 2200 West in West Jordan, with a six-lane lap pool and a leisure pool with a waterslide and a current channel (Salt Lake County, Gene Fullmer Recreation Center, checked October 2026).
Splash pads are Herriman’s actual summer water
Herriman City runs three splash pads, listed on its parks pages:
- J. Lynn Crane Plaza, 13082 South Fort Herriman Parkway, beside the plaza that hosts the food truck nights
- Rosecrest Splash Pad, 14070 South Rosecrest Road
- Umbria Estates Park, 12790 Brundisi Way
The city lists splash pad hours as 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., operating between Memorial Day and Labor Day (Herriman City, Parks, checked October 2026). Umbria’s own listing shows a narrower window, so check before you load the car.
Splash pads are good for small children and free. They are not a place to swim, and they shut after Labor Day even if September is still hot. What there is to do in Herriman covers how much of a July afternoon here runs through them, and are there all-abilities parks in Herriman covers the inclusive options nearby.
Blackridge Reservoir is not a substitute for a pool
Blackridge is open water with a beach, and in summer it is where a lot of Herriman goes to get wet. It has no lifeguard and swimming is at your own risk, there is no diving, and the city has closed it to swimming in the past when water-quality issues came up. Residents near it also live with summer parking permits.
For a confident swimmer it is a good option. For a family with young children who wanted supervised swimming, it is the wrong mental model. Is Blackridge Reservoir worth living near covers the rules and the parking system in full.
HOA pools and the private club coming in 2027
Some Herriman neighborhoods have their own pool through the homeowners association, and many do not. A pool is one of the amenities that turns up in the larger master-planned associations rather than in small subdivisions, and it is funded by the dues whether or not you swim. The Cove at Herriman Springs is the clearest example in the city of a small subdivision carrying one, with dues low enough that the reserve study is the first thing to ask for. Do homes in Herriman have HOAs explains how to read the reserve study, which matters with a pool, because resurfacing is a large expense that tends to arrive as a dues increase or a special assessment.
Daybreak, in South Jordan just north of Herriman, is the nearby example of a community where pools are part of the association’s amenity program; what the Daybreak HOA covers breaks that down.
On the private side, Life Time lists a Herriman club as arriving in 2027, with outdoor lap and leisure pools, on a membership basis (Life Time, Herriman, checked October 2026). That is a gym membership with a pool, not a public pool, and the opening date is the company’s to keep.
Does this matter when you choose a house
For most buyers, no. The indoor pool is a short drive from anywhere in Herriman and nobody chooses a street for it.
It matters in two cases. If outdoor summer swimming is a big part of how your family lives, check whether the specific neighborhood has an HOA pool, because that is the only outdoor pool you will be able to walk to. And if you are relocating from somewhere with a city pool in every town, adjust the expectation now rather than in June.
What I see with families moving into the south valley is that they ask about schools and yards in detail and assume the summer pool exists. In Herriman the honest answer is an indoor county pool, three splash pads and a reservoir with no lifeguard. If you are still deciding which part of the valley fits your family, moving here is the place to start.
The short version
Herriman’s only public pool is indoors at the J.L. Sorenson Recreation Center, run by Salt Lake County, with an eight-lane lap pool and a leisure pool with slides and a lazy river. Open swim runs weekday afternoons and evenings, Saturday afternoons and a short Sunday window, and the county asks you to call ahead. There is no city pool and no public outdoor pool in Herriman, and the county’s outdoor pool in Riverton was closed for 2026.
