Are fireworks allowed in Herriman?

Quick answer

Yes on certain dates, and no in large parts of the city. Utah sets the legal discharge windows around July 4, July 24, New Year's Eve and Chinese New Year. Herriman and the Unified Fire Authority then close off areas near wildland, waterways, trails and canyons, which covers a lot of Herriman.

Fireworks are legal in Herriman on specific dates set by the state, and prohibited in large parts of the city regardless of the date. Both halves of that sentence matter, because the restricted areas cover a meaningful share of a town built against the foothills.

If you are moving here from somewhere flatter, this is one of the local rules most worth reading before your first July.

Herriman follows the state calendar (Herriman City, herriman.gov/fireworks, checked October 21, 2026).

WindowDates
Independence DayJuly 2 through July 5
Pioneer DayJuly 22 through July 25
New YearDecember 31
Chinese New YearChinese New Year’s Eve

Times run generally from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., extended to midnight on July 4 and July 24. On December 31 discharge is allowed from 11 a.m. until 1 a.m. on January 1.

Sales run June 24 through July 25, December 29 through December 31, and the two days before and including Chinese New Year’s Eve.

Outside those windows, fireworks are not legal anywhere in the city, and that includes the week before the Fourth when half the neighborhood seems to be setting them off anyway.

The restricted areas, which are the real constraint

Herriman City and the Unified Fire Authority establish zones within the city where fireworks are prohibited outright. Those zones cover woodland and vegetated areas near homes, and areas within 200 feet of waterways, trails, canyons and similar natural features.

Look at a map of Herriman with that description in mind and you will see the problem. This is a city with foothills on one side, creeks running through it, and a trail network threaded between the subdivisions. A lot of addresses sit inside a restricted zone without the owner realizing it.

The Unified Fire Authority publishes an interactive restrictions map, and it is the thing to check rather than assuming. The zones are revised, so last year’s answer is not necessarily this year’s.

There is also a seasonal layer on top. In 2026, given dry conditions, the Unified Fire Authority recommended its member cities keep the Governor’s fireworks ban in place through July 5. A legal date on the calendar does not override a ban declared for that season.

Why Herriman takes this seriously

Because the risk here is real and local memory is long. Herriman sits in the wildland urban interface, where subdivisions meet dry foothill vegetation, and a fire that starts in that grass moves toward houses rather than away from them.

Whether wildfire is a risk for Herriman homes covers that exposure properly, including what it means for insurance and for which lots are most exposed. Fireworks restrictions are one visible expression of it.

If you are buying a lot that backs to open space, this is part of the package. What to weigh before buying next to open space in Herriman goes through the rest of the trade, and defensible space belongs on that list alongside the view.

What I actually see

Two patterns, both from people new to the area.

The first is a family that moves in during spring, buys fireworks in June because the stand is right there in the grocery store parking lot, and discovers on July 2 that their street is inside a restricted zone. The stand selling them is not evidence that you may discharge them where you live.

The second is subtler and more expensive. Buyers tour in winter, love the foothill lot, and never think about what a dry August looks like from that address. Fireworks are the small version of that question. Defensible space, roof material, and whether the slope above you is maintained are the large version.

Neither is a reason to avoid Herriman. They are reasons to look at a specific lot with open eyes.

What is actually prohibited, beyond location

The restrictions people trip over are about where. There are also rules about what.

Utah distinguishes between consumer fireworks, which are what the seasonal stands sell, and display fireworks, which require a licensed operator and a permit. Anything that leaves the ground beyond a set height, anything that reports like a mortar, and anything bought out of state where the rules differ can fall outside what is legal to discharge here. Nevada and Wyoming sell products Utah does not permit, and buying them legally there does not make them legal to set off at home.

The practical version: if it came from a Utah stand during a legal sale window, it is probably a permitted class. If it came from a road trip, check before you light it.

There is also a straightforward liability point worth saying plainly. If a firework you discharged starts a fire, you can be held responsible for suppression costs and damage. In a wildland interface city that is not a theoretical number.

If someone is setting them off illegally

Herriman asks that illegal discharge be reported to police dispatch at 801-840-4000 rather than 911, unless there is an actual emergency such as a fire or an injury.

Worth knowing before the night it happens, because most people either call the wrong number or decide it is not worth calling and then watch a field catch.

What to check before you buy

If this matters to your household, four questions, all answerable before you write an offer:

  1. Is the address inside a UFA restricted zone? Check the map rather than asking a neighbor.
  2. Does the HOA have its own rule? Associations can be stricter than the city, and many near open space are.
  3. How close is the nearest wildland edge? It drives fireworks rules, insurance, and what you will want to do with landscaping.
  4. What does the seller say about past fire seasons on that street? Not a legal question, but an informative one.

What to do next

Check the Unified Fire Authority map for the specific address, and treat the city’s fireworks page as the authority on dates. Both take a couple of minutes and both change year to year.

I am Kelsey Earl, a Realtor with Keller Williams South Valley and I work the Herriman foothills constantly, so if you are weighing a lot up against the open space, tell me which one and I will tell you honestly what comes with it.

Note: Dates, times and restriction descriptions here come from Herriman City and the Unified Fire Authority, checked October 21, 2026. Restricted zones and seasonal bans change every year. Confirm current rules with the city and the UFA map before discharging anything.
