Permit history is a public record. You can ask the city before you even write an offer. You don't need the seller's permission for this. Call the building department, or search their permit portal, and ask for the permit history on the address — then ask specifically whether each one was finaled, not just issued. Those are different answers and you have to ask for both. Why an open permit matters after you close: it generally attaches to the property, not the person who pulled it. So closing it out becomes your job, and it tends to resurface years later when you go to sell, or when you try to pull a permit of your own. Ask your city how they handle it — every building department is a little different. #utahrealestate #homebuyingtips #buildingpermits #homeinspection #utahhomes Kelsey Earl, journalist turned Realtor, born and raised in Utah, Salt Lake to St. George, 801-419-8917, [email protected], Your lifelong friend in real estate 🌟
