The Herriman to Salt Lake City commute is about 27 miles, and quick only when the road is empty. The empty-road version is the one every relocation buyer remembers, and it is the one that gets them into trouble.

Here is the honest version.

The distance: about 27 miles

Herriman to downtown Salt Lake City is roughly 27 miles by car.

You are at the southwest corner of the valley. That means you are driving north for nearly everything downtown, and the geography does not change no matter which route you take.

The time: quick when clear, considerably longer at rush hour

A mapping app checked at ten in the evening will give you a short, clean figure. That is the number that ends up in people’s heads, and it is the one that gets relocation buyers into trouble.

Morning and evening, Bangerter and I-15 back up. Drive it yourself at 8am before you commit to a downtown job from here. Not on a Sunday, not at lunchtime. At 8am on a weekday. That single test has changed more minds than anything else I say to buyers.

This is the most common regret I hear from people who bought in Herriman, and it is entirely avoidable.

Your two roads: Mountain View Corridor and Bangerter

Mountain View Corridor runs up the west side and keeps getting built out. Bangerter Highway has been converted to freeway-style interchanges at the major crossings. If you are comparing cities on the drive alone, the Bluffdale commute downtown and the Draper version are the two nearest alternatives.

Those two are what make a west-valley commute workable at all. Which one your neighborhood feeds onto matters more than almost any other location factor in Herriman — more than the school boundary, more than the view.

Before you make an offer, find out which road you would actually use and drive that specific approach.

Where you work changes everything

Downtown is the long haul. But a great many Herriman buyers do not work downtown.

South Jordan, Riverton, and the Point of the Mountain tech corridor are all far shorter drives — and for those commutes Herriman is genuinely convenient rather than a compromise. The city gets unfairly judged by a downtown commute that many of its residents never make.

Rail is not part of this commute

There is no TRAX or FrontRunner station in Herriman. The nearest TRAX stop is the Red Line’s Daybreak Parkway station in South Jordan (UTA).

If you want to park-and-ride into the city, you are driving to that station first. That is a legitimate arrangement and plenty of people do it — but it is a drive plus a train, not a train. There is more detail in does Herriman have TRAX or public transit.

The question that actually decides it

How many days a week are you genuinely in the office?

A hybrid schedule changes this calculation completely. Two days a week of a 50-minute drive is an entirely different life from five, and it opens up neighborhoods that would otherwise be a mistake.

Test it properly before you commit

The most useful thing in this post is a method rather than a number.

Drive it at the hour you would actually leave. Not midday while you are touring houses, and not on a weekend. The difference between a Tuesday at the real time and a Saturday at eleven is the whole question.

Drive it in a bad month. The route you drove in September is not the route in February. Snow, ice and reduced visibility change it, and they change it on exactly the mornings you least want it changed. If you are buying in June, ask people who live on the street what the winter version is like, and ask more than one.

Drive it from the specific street, not from the general area. Which arterial your street naturally feeds onto, and how long it takes to reach it, matters more than the map distance.

Do the return trip too. Evening congestion is its own thing and it is the half people forget to test.

The other drives that matter

Most households do not only commute downtown, and ranking the city on that one trip is how people get this wrong.

The airport. This is the trip people most underestimate from this corner of the valley, and there is no transit answer to it from here.

Lehi and Utah County. That drive is a completely different proposition, and Mountain View Corridor has improved it — the segment between Porter Rockwell Boulevard and 2100 North in Lehi opened December 20, 2025, about four months ahead of schedule, with two lanes each direction (Daily Herald, KUTV, ABC4). If your work is south rather than north, Herriman is well placed.

Everything else. Shopping, appointments, children’s activities. Those accumulate across a week in a way a single commute figure never captures.

If your household has two earners going in opposite directions, write both drives down before you choose an address. That one exercise resolves more of these decisions than any amount of research.

What to do if the commute is the dealbreaker

The honest alternatives are closer in rather than cheaper further out.

If rail is what you want, Daybreak and West Jordan’s Red Line corridor are the realistic options in this valley, and Herriman has no rail at all.

If being central matters more than space, whether to buy in Salt Lake City or the south valley is the comparison that actually addresses it — and sometimes the answer is the city.

There is no shame in concluding that. The commute is the most common regret here and the most avoidable one, and finding out before you buy costs you an afternoon rather than two years.

Whatever you decide, decide it after driving rather than after reading. This is one of the few housing questions with a free, definitive test available to you.

And if you are relocating from out of state and cannot drive it in advance, say so to whoever is helping you. There are ways to get you a realistic picture without guessing, and a guess here is expensive.
