Three things that make the asking actually work: Put it in writing, through your agent, to the listing side. A verbal answer in a hallway during a showing isn't anything you can come back to. In writing, you have the answer and the date you asked for it. Ask it as two questions, not one. Has anyone smoked in the home — and has anything been done about it. The second answer is usually the more useful one. Ask what's original and what's been replaced. Paint, carpet, the pad underneath the carpet, window coverings, ductwork. "We replaced the carpet" and "we replaced the carpet and the pad" are two different answers to the same question. And whether a seller has to answer you at all is a legal question — your agent first, an attorney if it really matters to you. Asking costs you nothing either way. Have you dealt with this one?
