What is Dinner on Main in St. George?

Quick answer

Dinner on Main is the night of Dixie Days when St. George closes Main Street south of St. George Boulevard and downtown restaurants serve dinner outdoors in the street. In 2026 it is Thursday, September 17, 5 to 9 p.m.: beer and wine garden from 5, restaurant seating from 6, the main dinner 7 to 9. Ticketed through the participating restaurants, and an adult evening.

Dinner on Main is the Thursday evening of Dixie Days when St. George closes Main Street south of St. George Boulevard and the downtown restaurants bring dinner out into the street. In 2026 it is Thursday, September 17, from 5 to 9 p.m. (City of St. George, Dixie Days 2026 listing, checked September 13, 2026).

It is the most grown-up event of the week, the one that shows off the downtown food scene rather than the pioneer history, and the one people ask me about most when they are trying to picture what living in St. George is actually like. As a Realtor with Keller Williams South Valley, I would put it near the top of the list of things to do if you are here that week deciding whether to move.

What the evening is like

The street closes, tables go out onto the asphalt where cars were that afternoon, and the restaurants along that stretch of Main serve their own menus to their own seated guests, with live music running down the block. The city describes it as a celebration of southern Utah’s culinary scene that benefits local restaurants and businesses, and that is a fair description. It is a dinner, not a food festival — you are seated at a restaurant’s table, outside, on a closed street, with the rest of downtown doing the same thing around you.

The beer and wine garden opens at 5 for the people who arrive early and for anyone without a dinner reservation. Seating begins at 6. The dinner itself runs 7 to 9, which in mid-September means it starts in daylight and ends under the streetlights, and the temperature does the same thing — warm at the beginning, comfortable by the end.

Who it suits

Couples, and adults out with friends. This is the point of it. If you want a night that feels like a city rather than a small town, this is the one night of the year downtown St. George most delivers that.

People deciding whether to move here. The St. George food scene is better than its reputation and smaller than what you left, and Dinner on Main is the most concentrated way to see the independent side of it in a single evening. Three restaurants at one table each is not the whole scene, but it is the character of it.

Newcomers who want to meet people. Meeting people in Washington County takes deliberate effort, and a seated dinner on a closed street next to strangers is the kind of setting where it happens without planning.

Who it does not suit

Families with young children. It is a ticketed sit-down dinner that starts at 7 and ends at 9, on a night when the carnival and the rodeo are also running. The Dixie Days events that work with kids are the free ones on Monday night and Saturday morning; this is not one of them.

Anyone who decides the day before. Seating is by restaurant and it is limited by the length of the street. The city’s page noted tickets going fast. If you want to go, book with one of the restaurants when you read this, not the week of.

Anyone expecting a bargain night out. Pricing is set by each restaurant, and it is a special-event dinner. It is not expensive by big-city standards; it is not a food-truck evening either.

The practical parts

Parking. Main Street south of the Boulevard is closed, and the carnival is at Town Square the same night, so downtown is full. Park a few blocks out and walk. The downtown grid is small and flat.

Weather. Mid-September is the turn of the season here — the first week that an outdoor dinner at 7 p.m. is pleasant rather than something to endure. It can still be warm at 5. Dress for both.

Alcohol. The beer and wine garden is a licensed, fenced area with its own hours. Utah’s rules on where a drink can be carried are stricter than most states, and the garden is set up to comply with them. Do not assume you can walk the street with a glass.

The rest of the week. Dinner on Main is Thursday. The rodeo runs Thursday through Saturday, the parade is Saturday morning, and Monday has the free concert and drone show. If you are visiting for a few days, Thursday night and Saturday morning together are the best two halves of the week.

If you cannot get a table

The beer and wine garden runs from 5 without a dinner reservation, the carnival is a short walk away at Town Square the same evening, and the street itself is open to walk. Plenty of people go to Dinner on Main without eating at Dinner on Main — a drink in the garden, a walk down the closed street while the music plays, then dinner somewhere else downtown. It is not the full experience, but it is a good evening, and it is free apart from what you drink.

Dinner on Main versus an ordinary night downtown

Be clear-eyed about this, because it is the question relocating buyers are really asking. On an ordinary Thursday, downtown St. George is quiet by nine. Most of the restaurant volume in the city is on the Boulevard and the commercial corridors, and much of it is chains. The independent places downtown are real and good, and there are fewer of them than someone from Salt Lake, Las Vegas or California is used to. Dinner on Main is downtown at full stretch — every table outside, the street closed, music on the block. It is honest about what the downtown can be, and it is not what the downtown is every week. Both of those are true, and knowing both is more useful than either alone.

Why a real estate agent cares about a dinner

Because the question underneath “what is Dinner on Main” is usually “does St. George have a downtown worth living near,” and the honest answer is: a small one, improving, and this is the night it makes its case. People who move here from larger cities miss restaurants more than they miss almost anything else. This event exists because the downtown restaurants are good enough to close a street for, and it is a fair preview of what an ordinary Friday night downtown can be at its best.

If you are here for Dixie Days and thinking about a move, visit during the week, but do not let it be your only visit. Come back in July before you decide. And if you want a straight read on which part of St. George puts you near downtown versus near the trails, the moving-here page is where to begin.

I am Kelsey Earl, a Realtor with Keller Williams South Valley, and I send relocating buyers to this specifically. An evening here tells you more about whether you would fit in this town than a week of driving neighborhoods.
