How does trash pickup work in South Jordan?

South Jordan ·
Quick answer

South Jordan contracts curbside collection to Ace Recycling and Disposal, with city-issued cans and a monthly fee on the city fee schedule. Collection day depends on your address, holidays push the rest of that week back a day, and bulk items are booked separately rather than left at the curb.

South Jordan runs automated curbside collection through a contractor rather than with city crews, and the cans at the house belong to the city. Your collection day depends on the address.

That is the whole mechanic, and it is duller than most topics here. It is on the site because it is one of the first things that goes wrong in a new house, and because one detail in it genuinely affects a purchase.

Who actually collects it

Ace Recycling and Disposal, under contract to the city. That split decides who you call:

Worth noting that the city has been out to bid for this service, so the contractor could change. The city’s page is the current answer.

Do not confuse South Jordan with West Jordan. They are different cities with different arrangements and different phone numbers, and a surprising number of people call the wrong one.

The cans are the city’s, not the house’s

This is the part that matters when you buy or sell. The containers are issued to the property by the city. They are not the seller’s to take and they are not yours to keep if you leave.

Two practical consequences. If a can is missing or wrecked at your final walkthrough, that is a conversation to have before closing rather than a problem you inherit. And the code expects containers to be stored out of public view between collections, which means a side yard or a garage, not the driveway. On a tight lot that is worth a look before you buy.

Holidays

The city observes the usual holidays, and the rule is that collection is delayed one day for the holiday and for the rest of that week. So a Tuesday holiday moves Tuesday to Wednesday, Wednesday to Thursday, and so on through Saturday. It does not simply skip.

Bulk items are booked, not dumped

Large items go through the city’s special pickup process, scheduled in advance, with a fee. They do not go at the curb next to the can and they do not go out with the regular collection.

This one is directly relevant to moving. The temptation after a move is to put the old sofa and the packing debris on the curb, and in South Jordan that is not how it works. Book it, or take it to the landfill yourself.

Set-out time

Have the cans out the night before. Published set-out times differ between sources, and collection on a given street can start early, so the only reliable approach is to put them out before you go to bed rather than in the morning.

Recycling, and the honest version of it

Recycling runs on its own calendar rather than with every collection, so the week matters. The city publishes the schedule, and if you are new the single most useful thing you can do is put it in your phone rather than trying to remember whether this is a recycling week.

The honest part, which the city will not say and I will: contamination is what decides whether a recycling program works, and the most common contaminants are the things people most want to recycle. Greasy pizza boxes, plastic bags, and anything still holding food. A load bad enough goes to the landfill anyway, which makes the whole exercise pointless.

If you want the short rule, it is that recycling is for clean, dry, empty containers and paper. Everything else is wishful.

What changes when the contract changes

The city has been out to bid on this service, which is routine and happens on a cycle. It is worth knowing because a new contractor can bring a new collection day, new cans, and a different number to call.

Nothing about that should affect a purchase decision. It is the reason this post points you at the city’s own page rather than reproducing a schedule here. A collection day printed in an article ages badly, and the city’s page does not.

The same caution applies to the fee. It sits on the city fee schedule and it is adjusted periodically, so the number to use when you are working out what a house costs to run is the one on the schedule the week you are buying.

What this tells you about a specific address

I am Kelsey Earl, a Realtor with Keller Williams South Valley, and I would not pretend this is a major factor in a purchase. It is a small one, and there are two things in it worth two minutes.

Where do the cans live? On a newer lot with a narrow side yard and a rear-load garage, there may be nowhere to store two large containers out of sight. That is a minor irritation that becomes a daily one, and it is visible on a showing if you look for it.

What is the access like? On a private lane, a flag lot or a shared drive, collection may not come to your door the way it does on a public street. That is worth asking about rather than assuming, and it is the same question that comes up with private road maintenance generally.

The wider point about city services

Trash is the easiest of the municipal services to check and the least consequential. The ones that actually cost money are water and sewer, and those vary much more.

Whether an address has secondary water changes your summer bills substantially, and in South Jordan that is an address-by-address question rather than a citywide one. What a house costs to run month to month is the same exercise one city over, and the pattern holds here.

If you are coming from out of state, the thing to internalize is that these services are municipal and they differ by city line. The arrangement in South Jordan is not the arrangement in Herriman or West Jordan, and moving five miles can change your hauler, your fee and your collection day.

What to do next

If you are buying, confirm the collection day for the address, check that both cans are present at the walkthrough, and look at where they can be stored.

What South Jordan is like to live in covers the parts of city life that matter more than this one, and the neighborhoods vary a lot in lot layout, which is really what decides the can-storage question.

The other seasonal city rule worth knowing is whether fireworks are permitted at your address, which is set by a restricted-area map rather than citywide.

Tell me the address you are looking at and I will go through the municipal services with you, including the ones that actually move your monthly costs.
