**Quick answer:** By spring, according to St. George News reporting from October 20, 2026, which says the store remains on track for its first Southern Utah location at St. George Place on South Bluff Street. No specific date has been announced, and an earlier timeline of 2025 came and went.

REI is expected to open by spring at St. George Place on South Bluff Street, according to the most recent local reporting ([St. George News, October 20, 2026](https://www.stgeorgeutah.com/news/what-s-going-there-more-shops-and-a-brand-new-theater-come-to-south-bluff/article_80e67046-3554-4d43-b4f1-166cc7e12a75.html)).

No specific date has been announced. And it is worth knowing that an earlier timeline had the store opening in 2025, which did not happen. This project has moved before.

## What is confirmed and what is not

**Confirmed:** the location, at St. George Place on South Bluff Street. This would be REI's first store in Southern Utah.

**Reported, but soft:** a spring opening. That comes from a St. George News segment carrying a sponsored content tag, which does not make it wrong but does mean it is the optimistic version.

**Not confirmed:** any date, hiring, or a grand opening announcement.

The signal to watch is recruitment. A store of that size hires and trains weeks ahead of opening, and those listings go up publicly on the company's own careers site. When they appear, the opening is close. Until they do, treat spring as an intention rather than a schedule.

## What else is in the same plaza

St. George Place has been filling in through 2026 ([St. George News, October 20, 2026](https://www.stgeorgeutah.com/news/what-s-going-there-more-shops-and-a-brand-new-theater-come-to-south-bluff/article_80e67046-3554-4d43-b4f1-166cc7e12a75.html)):

| | Status, as of October 20, 2026 |
| --- | --- |
| Bath & Body Works | Open |
| Uptown Cheapskate | Open |
| Desert Rose Floral | Open |
| Christensen's department store | Reopened |
| Zao Modern Asian Cafe | Final stages of construction |
| The Craft Lounge | Final stages of construction |
| REI | Expected by spring |

Just south of the plaza, a new permanent home for St. George Musical Theater is scheduled to debut December 12, described as a 21,000-square-foot, 350-seat venue ([St. George News, October 20, 2026](https://www.stgeorgeutah.com/news/what-s-going-there-more-shops-and-a-brand-new-theater-come-to-south-bluff/article_80e67046-3554-4d43-b4f1-166cc7e12a75.html)).

Further up the same corridor, [Ruth's Chris and Rodizio Grill are under construction](/blog/what-new-restaurants-are-coming-to-st-george/) on the ridge toward Tech Ridge, with no announced date.

## Why an outdoor retailer picking this county is not a surprise

REI locates where outdoor participation is high and household incomes support the spend. Washington County is an obvious fit, and the mild shoulder seasons mean the activity is close to year-round rather than compressed into a summer.

What is more interesting is the site. South Bluff Street is a corridor the city has been reshaping, and the arrival of a national outdoor retailer alongside a theater, a department store and a cluster of restaurants is a fairly clear statement about what that corridor is meant to become.

For anyone buying nearby, that is the useful part. Not the opening date, but the pattern of who is choosing to be there.

## The caveat that applies to all of this

South Bluff Street is in the middle of a reconstruction that runs into winter 2028, and the I-15 widening between Bluff Street and St. George Boulevard runs alongside it on the same timeline. The details are in [how long the road construction will last](/blog/how-long-will-the-road-construction-in-st-george-last/).

So the corridor is gaining a great deal while being genuinely harder to drive for the next two years. Both things are true and buyers tend to hear only one of them depending on who they are talking to.

If you are buying nearby, price the construction years honestly. They are real, they are now, and they affect daily life more than a store opening does. If you are selling nearby, the finished corridor is the story, and it is a good one.

## What a store like this actually changes locally

Worth separating the real effects from the imagined ones, because buyers routinely overstate the second.

The genuine effect is traffic and tenancy. A national anchor brings consistent footfall, and consistent footfall makes neighboring units easier to lease. That is how a half-occupied plaza becomes a full one, and a full plaza is a better neighbor than an empty one for anybody living nearby. The second-order effect of an anchor is usually more interesting than the anchor itself.

The second real effect is on daily convenience, which is not nothing. For households that spend weekends outdoors, having gear, repairs and rentals in the county rather than a long drive away is a genuine quality-of-life change. Southern Utah has had to drive for that.

What does not happen is a measurable step change in nearby home values attributable to one store. Values here are driven by supply, rates, and the steady inflow of people moving to the county. A retailer is a symptom of those forces rather than a cause of them.

The one place to be careful is traffic. An anchor draws cars, and if you are buying on a street that feeds the plaza, the quiet you assess on a Tuesday showing is not the quiet you get on a Saturday once the corridor is finished and full.

## What this means for a buying decision

Very little, and I would rather say that plainly than pretend otherwise.

A store opening does not move a neighborhood's values in a way you can trade on. By the time it is public knowledge, whatever effect it was going to have on nearby property has mostly happened. What I actually see is buyers using news like this to justify a decision they had already made emotionally, which is fine, as long as they know that is what they are doing.

Where it is legitimately useful is in choosing between options you are already considering. If two houses work and one puts you closer to where amenities are concentrating, that is a sensible tiebreaker. It is not a reason to stretch.

I am Kelsey Earl, a Realtor with Keller Williams South Valley. The clients I see happiest with their choice picked for the commute, the lot and the neighborhood, and treated the retail as a bonus that arrived later.

## Why these dates slip, which is worth understanding once

A retail opening date is not a single decision. It is the last link in a chain, and any link can stretch it.

The building shell has to be finished and inspected. The tenant then takes possession and begins its own fit-out, which for a store of this kind means fixtures, racking, point-of-sale systems and often a service shop. That work needs its own permits and its own inspections, and a certificate of occupancy comes at the end rather than the beginning.

Then there is staffing. A store hires and trains a full team before it opens, and in a county with a tight labor market that is not instant.

Layered on top here is a corridor under reconstruction, which can affect access, utility work and the sequencing of anything that needs a road closed or a lane taken.

None of that suggests the project is in trouble. It explains why a date announced eighteen months out is a plan and a date announced six weeks out is a commitment. Watch for the second kind.

## How to check the current state

Search REI's own careers page for St. George listings. That is the most reliable public signal and it is free.

Check the city's permit and occupancy records, which are public and more honest than any announcement.

And look at the date on whatever you are reading. A great deal of what ranks for this question was written in 2025 and describes a timeline that has already slipped once.
