**Quick answer:** Only on the dates Utah law allows, and not everywhere in the city. State law limits consumer fireworks to short windows around July 4 and July 24, and a city may restrict further in designated areas. South Jordan publishes a restricted map each year, so the answer is address-specific rather than citywide.

South Jordan allows fireworks only on the dates Utah law permits, and not on every street. Two separate rules govern it, and people routinely satisfy one and break the other.

The state decides when. The city and the fire authority decide where. Getting the first right and the second wrong is the most common way a household ends up with a citation.

Source: Utah Code 53-7-225, with 2026 dates as published by the State Fire Marshal. Restricted-area maps are reissued annually, so use the current one rather than this page.

## The state rule: when

| Window | Dates | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Independence Day | July 2 to July 5 | 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. |
| Pioneer Day | July 22 to July 25 | 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. |
| July 4 and July 24 | Those days | Extended to midnight |
| Chinese New Year 2026 | February 16 to 17 | 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. |

Outside those windows it is an infraction, with a fine up to $1,000. A governor's order can narrow them further in a dry year without the statute changing at all.

## Why there are two summer windows

Pioneer Day on July 24 is a state holiday in Utah, marking the 1847 arrival of the Mormon pioneers in the valley, and it is celebrated at roughly the same scale as Independence Day. Newcomers are often surprised that July has two firework weeks rather than one.

They are also surprised by how tight the windows are. Utah contracted them over several legislative sessions after repeated fire seasons, and the direction has been one way. Dates are worth re-checking each year rather than memorizing.

## What counts as a firework

Narrower than most people assume. Utah separates consumer fireworks, the kind sold at seasonal stands, from display fireworks, which require a licensed operator and a permit. Anything that climbs past a set height, or is designed to explode rather than burn, generally sits outside what a consumer may discharge.

Sparklers and snaps are a separate category and are not bound by the same dates, though a restricted area can still exclude them.

Items bought legally in Nevada or Wyoming are not automatically legal to discharge here. Crossing a state line with them does not make them compliant, and that catches people every year.

## The local rule: where

Utah law lets a city designate areas where consumer fireworks are prohibited, and cities use it along the wildland urban interface, where housing meets dry undeveloped ground.

South Jordan is mostly flat valley floor, which means it has less of that terrain than Sandy or the Oquirrh foothill cities. That does not mean the map is empty. Open space, detention basins, the river corridor and undeveloped parcels awaiting construction all create dry ground, and a city still growing has plenty of the last category.

The practical consequence is that the map here can change between years as parcels build out, which is a reason to pull the current one rather than relying on what was true when you moved in.

## What the map quietly tells you

I am Kelsey Earl, a Realtor with Keller Williams South Valley, and nobody chooses a house on fireworks. The map is worth five minutes for two other reasons.

**It flags dry open ground next to a property.** If your lot borders an area the fire authority has designated, that tells you something about what is next door and how it is managed, which is a question worth asking anyway.

**It tells you what July sounds like.** In an unrestricted neighborhood with heavy participation, the first week of July is loud for several nights running. Some households love that. Anyone with a nervous dog, a newborn, or a night shift feels differently, and that is cheaper to learn before you buy.

## The association can be stricter

A city ordinance sets the floor. A recorded restriction can sit above it, and plenty of South Jordan communities prohibit fireworks on common areas or outright. [The CC&Rs are where that lives](/blog/what-are-ccrs-and-how-do-i-read-them-before-buying), and in a master-planned community the rules are usually more detailed than a buyer expects. [What the Daybreak association covers](/blog/what-does-the-daybreak-hoa-cover) is worth reading if you are looking there.

## Where people actually get caught

Not in dramatic ways. The common citation is a household that held its gathering on the nearest Saturday rather than on a legal date, or that ran past eleven on a night when the extension to midnight did not apply. The fireworks were legal. The location was legal. The day or the hour was not.

The other reliable complaint generator is debris. Spent casings on roofs and in neighbors' yards, left for a week in a dry July, is what gets a street reported the following year regardless of what the map says. Soaking debris before it goes in a bin is the standard advice and it exists because warm casings have started fires in bins.

## Fines, and who actually pays them

Discharging outside the legal dates or inside a restricted area is an infraction carrying a fine of up to $1,000. That is the headline number and it is rarely the expensive part.

The expensive part is liability. If a firework you discharged starts a fire, you can be on the hook for suppression costs and damage, and those figures are not in the same universe as a fine. Utah fire authorities say this every summer and they are not posturing. A grass fire that reaches a fence line, a shed or a roof becomes a six-figure problem quickly.

The practical read for a homeowner is that the legal question and the insurance question are different. Being within the law does not make you safe, and a legal discharge that causes damage is still damage you caused.

## If fireworks matter to your household

Some families genuinely build their summer around this, and there is nothing wrong with that. If you are one of them, two pieces of advice.

Buy where you are allowed to use them, which means checking the map before the offer rather than after, and favoring the flatter, built-out parts of the city over the edges that border open ground.

And read the association documents properly, because the most common disappointment is not a city restriction at all. It is a buyer who checked the city map, found their street clear, and then discovered their own community prohibits fireworks on every square foot of it.

## What to check before you make an offer

**Pull the current restricted-area map for the address**, not for the city.

**Look at what the lot borders.** Open ground, a basin or an unbuilt parcel is the characteristic these maps key on, and it is visible on a showing.

**Read the association documents.**

**Ask a neighbor about July.** It is the only reliable way to learn what participation on that street is like.

## What to do next

Pull the map, read the documents, ask the neighbor. All three are free and together they take under an hour.

[What South Jordan is like to live in](/blog/what-is-it-like-living-in-south-jordan-utah) covers the wider picture, and [how trash and city services work here](/blog/how-does-trash-pickup-work-in-south-jordan) is the same category of question, dull and worth knowing before you move rather than after.

[Riverton's restricted footprint is smaller](/blog/are-fireworks-allowed-in-riverton-utah), being further from the foothills, though its older farm parcels create dry ground of their own.

[Send me the address](/moving-here) and I will check the restricted map and the association rules with you before you write an offer.
